A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die, and every second counts. The sooner a stroke is identified and treated, the better the chances of recovery.
At Prolife Diagnostics Centre in Bhubaneswar, we often see patients who ignore early signs of stroke, which sadly leads to long-term complications. This is why knowing the warning signs can save lives.
What is a Stroke?
A stroke happens when:
- A blood clot blocks a blood vessel in the brain (called ischemic stroke – most common type), or
- A blood vessel bursts and causes bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke).
In both cases, part of the brain doesn’t get the blood and oxygen it needs.
3 Major Warning Signs of Stroke You Should Never Ignore
1️⃣ Sudden Numbness or Weakness (especially on one side)
- If you suddenly feel numbness or weakness in your face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body — this is a strong warning sign.
- For example, you may suddenly drop things from one hand or feel your face droop on one side when you smile.
2️⃣ Trouble Speaking or Understanding Speech
- If someone suddenly starts slurring words, talking unclearly, or can’t understand what you’re saying, this could be a sign of stroke.
- They may seem confused or use the wrong words.
🔎 How to Check: Ask them to repeat a simple sentence like “The sky is blue.” If they struggle or speak abnormally, seek help.
3️⃣ Sudden Loss of Balance, Vision, or Severe Headache
- A person having a stroke may suddenly feel dizzy, lose coordination, or have trouble walking.
- They may also complain of blurred or double vision, or experience a sudden severe headache without any known cause.
🔎 How to Check: Ask the person to walk in a straight line or raise both arms. If one arm drifts down or they can’t keep balance, it’s time to call for help.

Time Is Brain! Act FAST
Use the acronym FAST to remember stroke signs:
- F – Face: Ask them to smile. Is one side drooping?
- A – Arms: Ask them to raise both arms. Is one drifting down?
- S – Speech: Ask them to speak. Are the words slurred or strange?
- T – Time: If you see any of these signs, call emergency services immediately.
